Flag Football in Middle School PE
Flag Football in Middle School PE
by Denise Lujan, Physical Education, Middle School
After countless days of being rained out in December, middle school PE is starting off the new year with a continuation of our flag football unit. Did you know that flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country? It has gained so much popularity that now several states including California have now added it into their sports programs in high schools and colleges. Flag football will even be added to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles! One reason for its appeal is that it is more inclusive where all players on offense except the quarterback are allowed to catch and receive the ball. It is also a high-energy sport that benefits cardiovascular health, endurance, and agility. Lastly, flag football offers a safe way to learn the fundamentals of football but is a low to no-contact sport where instead of tackling, players pull flags that are worn. The middle school students have shown great enthusiasm for the sport and have worked on throwing and catching skills, as well as the most important skill, teamwork!
