Fifth-grade Memoir Writing Integrates Humanities and Judaic Studies

Memoir writing is one focus of the fifth grade language arts curriculum, along with personal narrative writing and report writing. Before winter break, students spent time in Judaic studies talking about immigration, and interviewing an immigrant in their lives. “Now, we're taking the information that they gathered during the interview process and are working on crafting memoirs based on those interviews,” says humanities teacher Madeleine MacKenzie. “This project serves as a link between the writing curriculum and Judaic studies, integrating the two subjects to deepen the students’ understanding. In addition to curricular integration, the project links the families and personal histories of the members of our class, and brings our collective histories front and center during this unit.”
