Middle School Students Adapt to At-Home PE

We may be operating in a distance learning model, but that hasn't stopped our Brandeis PE teachers from ensuring students are staying physically and mentally healthy. In PE, middle school students are doing one day of boxing/kickboxing workouts as well as another day of a variety of sports related movements.

"Both days of PE right now are designed for the students to get a lot of movement in a small space," says PE teacher Sam Dossick.

The exercises are allowing the students to strengthen a variety of muscle groups as well as continue to work on raising and lowering our heart rate and our cardiovascular endurance.

In addition, the 7th and 8th graders are working on goal setting. They have selected a goal that is of interest to them for the month of October. Then, they broke down that goal into smaller weekly goals. Each week they are working toward accomplishing their weekly goal before reflecting on how it went.

The 5th and 6th graders are learning about relaxation and intention breaths that can be very helpful to do on a daily basis. They are starting to understand the idea of being present, listening to their breath, and setting intentions for the day and the week.
