Brandeis Students Give Back to San Francisco Community on All-school Volunteer Day

On Wednesday, May 30, every Brandeis student participated in an all-school volunteer day in various parks throughout San Francisco. Organized by Dean of Student Life Sharona Israeli-Roth, this Brandeis all-school volunteer day coincided with World Environment Day and ties in closely with our Brandeis community value of tikkun olam—repairing the world—which says, “We embrace our collective responsibility to help repair the world.” Our students took part in various park restoration projects at four San Francisco parks: kindergarten through second grade students picked up trash and removed weeds at Heron’s Head Park; third and fourth graders worked to remove erharta grass and dandelions along the paths at the Visitacion Valley Native Plant Garden; fifth and sixth graders worked to remove invasive plants at John McLaren Park; and seventh and eighth graders went to Bayview Park, where they removed French Broom and weeds.

It is pretty cool to come to the end of the school year and get to come together to give back in ways that are so consistent with the things we have talked about and taught in the classroom all year,” says Head of School Dr. Dan Glass. And for me, to be outside on a spring day with our kindergarteners doing habitat restoration work and think about their arc at Brandeis in the eight years to come was really special and exciting.” MORE PHOTOS
