A Fairy-tale Ending to First Grade

On Friday, June 1 Barbara Eisenhauer’s first grade class celebrated the conclusion of their final Writers Workshop unit by hosting a Fairy-tale Tea. For the past six weeks, first graders have been studying fairy tales. Students read many fairy tales, including different versions of the same stories, and learned about fractured fairy tales—a story that has been modified to make the audience laugh at an unexpected characterization or plot development. Then, it was their turn to write their own fairy tales. Students began with planning sheets before moving on to rough drafts, and then finally editing those to create their final drafts. Of course, as with any fairy tale, students illustrated their story for their final piece.

“It was a joyous celebration filled with family, tea, tea sandwiches, miniscones, and small desserts,” says Ms. Eisenhauer. “The students were so proud of their work and so excited to share it with their families and friends. This was the perfect fairy tale ending to first grade!” MORE PHOTOS
