Student-created Brandeis Quilt Embodies Year of Mentoring

As the culminating activity of the Brandeis mentoring program, mentor buddy pairs worked together to create a square for a student-created quilt. “After the Mentoring Youth Board (MYB) participated in the mural walk and workshop, they wanted to bring their experience back to Brandeis and incorporate our entire student community,” explains Dean of Student Life Sharona Israeli-Roth. “They began to brainstorm ideas for how the mentor buddy pairs could share how the year of mentoring was for them. In our last MYB meeting, they came up with the idea to create a quilt.” Students worked together to draw and write about what the mentoring program has given them, experiences they enjoyed as part of this program, and things they love about their buddies.

This project stems from a Brandeis Innovation Grant, funded generously by the Karp-Haahr family. Says Susan Karp, “This quilt is exactly the kind of project we hoped would come from the Innovation Grants program: It involved the whole school, it was artistic, creative and self-empowering. and, at its heart, it's all about kindness and empathy. It really is a physical embodiment of the Brandeis core values and we are exceptionally proud that our donation had a part in making it happen." MORE PHOTOS
