Brandeis Families Create Mural with Residents from SFCJL

Debby Arzt-Mor, Director of Jewish Learning

Deepening relationships with our community partners creates new tikkun olam opportunities for our families, as we work toward the goal of our strategic plan to strengthen our connections to the broader community through service learning and social action for all our constituencies.

Our community partnership with the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL), through our year-long intergenerational Better Together Program provides our eighth grade students opportunities to build meaningful relationships with residents at SFCJL and to be a source of joy to many of the participants. The Better Together program has been going strong all year, and is now paving the way toward additional tikkun olam projects for our families.

This past Sunday, families with students in grades four through eight came to SFCJL to work with the senior residents on a beautiful mural, directed by Portraits of Hope, a non-profit organization combining civics and art projects internationally and throughout the United States. It was wonderful to see our students bringing joy to the senior residents, while creating a beautiful art piece together. A picture is worth a thousand words, so please take a moment to check out the photo gallery (link below).

Rebecca Holzman, the Intergenerational Volunteer Coordinator at the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living, sent her heartfelt thanks on Monday to our community:

“Thank you so much for joining SFCJL & POH yesterday for a community art project! It was wonderful to see residents and volunteers of all ages painting together and getting to know one another. SFCJL’s Goodman Lobby and hallway have been totally transformed into colorful, inviting spaces. We could not have done this without your help and we are very grateful. We hope you will join us for future volunteer events.”

Thank you, Rebecca and SFCJL! We look forward to future opportunities for bringing our communities together.
