Seventh Grade Experiential Education Focuses on Leadership, Tzedek

Our seventh graders embarked last week for their 3-day, 2-night outdoor education trip. This experiential education trip focused on the themes of leadership and tzedek (justice), two themes that permeate the seventh grade curriculum. Students collaborated in group challenges; hiked through the woods; spent time discussing different types of leadership and the choices they can make around tzedakah; and participated in tefillah rotations including singing songs, hiking in nature, writing prose, discussing the weekly portion, and exercising through fitness and mindfulness. Before heading home, seventh graders participated in a service project at Family Crossroads—an organization that provides temporary housing and coaching for homeless families. The class painted a mural on the play-yard wall, made Valentine’s day cards and decorations, sorted the clothing closets and food pantries, and cleaned vacant apartments.

The students left the retreat “feeling empowered, and are excited to put all of their ideas to work,” says teacher and chaperone Jody Bloom. “I was so impressed with the integrity our students showed, the way they truly listened to their peers.” Adds seventh grader Zoe W., “I learned a lot about my fellow classmates and experienced the outdoors in a way I never have before."
