Fourth Graders Share Research as Part of "Jews Around the World" Event

Fourth graders took parents and students on a trip around the world yesterday, sharing fun facts, presentation books, and food from Jewish communities all over the world. “I created this project because I realized that we live in a very specific Jewish community here in the Bay Area,” says Judaic studies teacher Sharona Israeli-Roth. Each student in the class selected a Jewish community—either an existing community or a historic community—to research, write about, and create a presentation book of facts and information. The communities of Jews included—but were certainly not limited to—Scottish Jews, Turkish Jews, Swedish Jews, Indian Jews, and Ethiopian Jews. The room was filled with the scent of food, as each student made a dish representing the cuisine of the community they researched.

Adds Ms. Israeli-Roth, “This project will lead us into our unit about Israel, as all of these Jewish traditions and communities came to Israel to create the Israeli culture of today.” MORE PHOTOS
