First Graders Celebrate Dental Health Month

A visit to the dentist is usually not a child's idea of fun—unless it's a class field trip. To celebrate Dental Health Month, first graders visited the dental office of Dr. John Schulz (alumni parent and husband of teacher Barbara Eisenhauer) and John Romero’s dental lab, located in the Stonestown Medical Dental Building. After a warm welcome by Dr. Schulz, the students split into two groups. One group explored dental health and how dentists treat cavities. After the explanation, the students even got to don gloves and masks to fill a "cavity" in a fake tooth, using dental tools and materials.

Meanwhile, down the hall in John Romero’s dental lab, the second group learned all about teeth, dental implants, false teeth, and materials used in a dental lab. After 25 minutes, the groups switched labs. After meeting for a review of the afternoon and a question-and-answer period, the students left with goodie bags filled with brushes, floss, toys, and information for parents.

In addition to being an exciting
and educational field trip that taught the students about dental health and the dental profession, said Ms. Eisenhauer, "It also helped to alleviate some of the fear of visiting a dentist." MORE PHOTOS
