Fourth Graders Share Health Expertise

Fourth graders completed their health unit in science by hosting a fair and sharing their knowledge with parents and lower school peers. “The Health Fair is a great opportunity for students to direct their learning based on personal interest and connections to a health topic,” explains teacher Kate Callan. This year, students selected to research topics including sleep disorders, amnesia, yoga, and color blindness. “The students honed their research and synthesizing skills, as well as practiced expository writing,” adds teacher Valerie Welsh. “Students gained invaluable experience with public speaking as they presented to many visitors. The students were poised, professional, and knowledgeable.”

This project challenges students to read through various sources and determine the validity of what they are reading. “Today it is really convenient to access information. Slowing down to reflect on whether what you are reading makes sense and is in line with your other research makes this an excellent critical thinking opportunity for our students.” MORE PHOTOS
