Renowned Cancer Researcher Speaks to Middle School Students

The Lunch and Learn program for middle school students launched last semester, to much success. So far, students have had the opportunity to learn about virtual reality, writing and publishing a children’s book, and about the history of San Francisco’s water supply. This week, Dr. Wendell Lim, director of the UCSF Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology and professor of cellular and molecular pharmacology, spoke to a packed house of middle schoolers about the research he is doing in the fight against cancer. “Lunch and Learn is all about bringing in different topics and experiences for our students,” explains Dean of Student Life Sharona Israeli-Roth. “Dr. Lim is one of the foremost cancer researchers, so it was a great honor to have him here.” Dr. Lim explained what the scientists do in his lab, Lim Lab, and the work he is doing regarding cancer treatments.

“The Lunch and Learn program has been very successful,” adds Ms. Roth. “It shows that our student body wants to learn more and have broader experiences. It was amazing to see 56 students participate in this voluntary program.” Ms. Roth is always looking for interesting speakers.
