In Our Own Backyards: Third Graders Learn about Local Wildlife

With a touch of feathers, fur, and scales, third graders learned this week about the astounding animals that live right here in our own neighborhoods. This presentation, from WildCare’s Nature Van (located in San Rafael), provided the students with an overview of our state’s wonderfully diverse wildlife.

Through a collection of beautiful taxidermy models, students had the opportunity to be hands-on with animals they wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience up close, leaving them with a strengthened sense of responsibility toward preserving our planet.

"This program was a good introduction to our upcoming animal book clubs," teacher Lori Galante commented enthusiasticlly. “Our visit with California wildlife was a precursor to an upcoming Readers Workshop unit featuring animal book clubs.” In this unit, students will engage in book clubs and learn how to research and synthesize information about a group of animals. Ms. Galante added, "Our students learned how to be wildlife superheroes." MORE PHOTOS
