Second Graders Work in Groups to Study Biomes Around the World

Second grade students are currently engaged in a science unit about biomes: large, naturally-occurring communities of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat (for example, forest or tundra). “This topic allows our students to integrate their learning about plants, animals, food chains, adaptations, climate and weather, and geography,” explains teacher Rachel Klein. Each small group, comprised of 3–4 students, has been assigned a different biome to investigate. “Instead of studying a number of biomes broadly, students go deeper in their knowledge about a particular biome,” adds Ms. Klein. After creating posters about their biomes, groups of students present to their classmates, which allows the whole class to learn from one another about the different biomes.

Exclaims Ms. Klein, “The energy and excitement around the classroom while students are engaged in this collaborative science work is palpable and a pleasure to facilitate!” MORE PHOTOS
