First-ever Community Shabbat Dinner Feeds a Hunger for More Connection

On Friday, June 9, 200 members of our families and faculty school community gathered in the gym for the first-ever Kabbalat Shabbat evening celebrated by The Brandeis School of San Francisco. “The evening was enjoyed by all,” said Director of Jewish Learning Debby Artz-Mor, “and has inspired us to plan for more frequent low-key community Shabbat dinners at school, for a variety of class groupings.” She expressed profound thanks to Parent Association President Luis Yaquián for his vision in inspiring this event; “to Neal Biskar and Ardath Kirchner for gracing us with their music; and to Joe Vigil and his team and the other parent volunteers for set-up and breakdown.”

Parent Ariel Ford enthused, “Thank you, Debby and Luis—this was a simply magical evening of connection. The Shabbat feeling was completely alive—there was this beautiful moment where we were all singing the Kiddush and the sun was streaming into the gym as everyone sang, and I think we were all feeling it. I look forward to more of these. It was a great way to connect without the pressure of a major holiday.”
