Mindfulness and Yoga Help Kindergarteners Transition from Home to School

Throughout the week, kindergarteners engage in mindfulness and yoga. “It’s a way for students to become aware of their body and to help them with self-control as they transition from home to school,” says teacher Lisa Hawley. Walk into a class during mindfulness and you’ll see students practicing their breathing—including the flower breath technique, where students imagine they are sniffing a flower—and sitting cross-legged while opening and closing their palms. During yoga, students listen to soft music that leads them through a series of sun salutations and poses—downward dog and child’s pose, to name a few.

“Mindfulness helps students get into a good place to help them relax. It allows them to focus and be present,” adds Ms. Hawley. “And yoga gets students stretching and moving their bodies to help them get ready for the day.” Both mindfulness and yoga help lay the foundation for a successful day at school for our students.
