New Take on Team Sports Teaches Leadership Skills—Among Others— to Middle Schoolers

There is a new curriculum in middle school P.E. this year, focused on broadening students’ skills in participating in and strategizing about team sports. “Students will participate in different sports in a variety of ways,” explains teacher Sam Dossick. “They will have the opportunity to play the sport as well as take on different leadership roles, including head coach, assistant coach, and team manager.” The idea behind this new curriculum is that these roles will give students perspective on what goes into running and managing a team and, says Mr. Dossick, "will allow students to work on leadership skills, cooperation, communication, and holding each other accountable for their efforts." Students are currently participating in the flag football season and will move to basketball afterwards.

“I am excited to bring this new curriculum, and I feel the students will benefit from seeing these sports from the perspective of both players and coaches,” adds Mr. Dossick. MORE PHOTOS
