Third Grade Begins Study of Computer Science

This week, third graders have been introduced to computer science. Students are using resources provided by Code.org—a non-profit launched in 2013 that is dedicated to expanding access to computer science—and Scratch, a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. “The study of computer science is invaluable,” says Leo Stern, technology integration specialist. “It increases one’s ability to solve complex, challenging problems. It also offers opportunities for true creativity and innovation, and has space for both collaborative work and individual effort.”

Using a set of code and instructions, students taught characters to solve a series of puzzles; the instructions included "move left," "move right," "move up," and "move down." “Not only is the study of computer science interesting and fun,” adds Mr. Stern, “but also the skills the students learn in these activities will help them in every facet of their education, in and out of the classroom.” MORE PHOTOS
