Students Learn How to Bake a Cake—in Hebrew!

In the fifth grade Chaverim B’Ivrit curriculum, students read a story in Hebrew about a girl who is having a birthday. The story teaches students how to write an invitation and plan a birthday party, all using Hebrew vocabulary, grammar, and verbs. Students also read about the girl’s father baking her a birthday cake and are now bringing this learning to life. Practicing their speaking skills, students will create their own baking show of sorts, where they will pick out their favorite cake recipes and explain all of the steps of baking the cake, including listing the ingredients and necessary equipment.

“This project helps reinforce using the right grammar and vocabulary,” says teacher Sharona Israeli-Roth. “Teaching Hebrew by doing enhances students’ understanding of the curriculum and gets them excited to immerse themselves in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.”
