Lower School Students Honor Martin Luther King Jr. and His Legacy

At last Friday’s lower school assembly, students gathered to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. “This assembly is dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. and changemakers all over the world,” said Jenny Rinn, director of lower school, to begin the assembly. After a first grader shared the definition of a changemaker—someone who sees a problem in the community and has the courage to take action to make a change—second graders in 2W stood up in front of the group and read the beginning of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and then shared their own dreams. Ms. Rinn showed students a video clip of the San Francisco Women’s March in 2017 to demonstrate that there are many changemakers. “I think it was really important to make MLK Day relevant to our students’ lives,” says Ms. Rinn. “By connecting MLK’s march in Washington, D.C., to the Women’s March here in San Francisco, it provided a connection for our young students.” Students in 2B followed by sharing the heroes and “sheroes” they’ve learned about in class.

Adds Ms. Rinn, “It’s really important for our students to think about how many people can be changemakers and the power of working together to create change.” MORE PHOTOS
