Sixth Grade Leads Middle School Community in Morning Tefillah Service

This morning the sixth graders led their middle school peers and families in a traditional Shacharit (morning) service. Students shared introductions to each of the prayers that included the meaning of the prayer, the history of the prayer, their thoughts about the prayer, and their creation of a modern version of the prayer. In addition, students read beautifully from the Torah, volunteering to take on this challenging task. Two students presented a summary and interpretation of this parashah (Torah portion), Terumah. Live music was incorporated into the singing of the blessings, as sixth graders played various instruments including the piano, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, and bass guitar. “As the sixth graders begin to prepare for their bar or bat mitzvah, it is so empowering to watch them lead a Shacharit service,” says Judaic studies teacher Jody Bloom. Following the service, those in attendance were invited to view art pieces created by the sixth graders and displayed at the back of the sanctuary. The art conveyed the students’ reflections and interpretations of the parashah and varied from paintings to clay pieces to three-dimensional models.

Says Ms. Bloom, "It was wonderful for the community to hear the students’ personal thoughts on the prayers and join their voices to ours to come together in prayer." MORE PHOTOS
