First Graders Brave the Cold to Explore Bay Area Discovery Museum

As part of their science unit on air and weather, first graders visited the Bay Area Discovery Museum on Tuesday, where they explored Horseshoe Bay and participated in a STEM workshop. Students had the chance to see firsthand how the weather and air impact where animals live. Braving the cold, first graders searched for animals that live in the intertidal zone in Horseshoe Bay. They saw acorn barnacles and crabs and learned about why these animals live in this particular environment. Following this exploration, first graders were tasked with using various art supplies and recycled materials to create animals with special adaptations for where they live.

“It was a really cold day,” says teacher Nicole Schoentag, “but it was great to see the students digging in the sand and discovering crabs and learning with each other.” MORE PHOTOS
