Pi Day Serves Up a Tasty Slice of Math

Celebrated on March 14 (3.14), Pi Day is celebrated by “mathletes" around the world to encourage a love of math learning. Our Brandeis mathletes took part in Pi Day festivities yesterday, with fifth through eighth grade mentors visiting their kindergarten through fourth grade mentees and leading the students in Pi Day–related activities. “I look at this schoolwide event as a way to further emphasize how much fun math is for ALL students, big and small!” exclaims Ali Frank, math chair. Students across the grades read books (the Sir Cumference series) and wrote Pi-kus, and middle school students even competed in a Pi-digit challenge where they recited as many digits of Pi as they could.

“At Brandeis, we foster creativity and curiousity in our students,” adds Ms. Frank. “I think this day really brings out that side of our students and piques their interest in a math subject that perhaps they were unaware was so important in everyone’s lives.” And every student was given a tasty treat to end the celebration: a cookie in the shape of a circle!
