Kindergarteners Make Paper with Artist Julia Goodman

This week, kindergarteners had the exciting opportunity to learn how to make paper with artist Julia Goodman, who was a visiting artist at Brandeis in the fall as part of our arts outreach program. This time she was back to lead our youngest students in a paper-making workshop, which tied in perfectly with the science curriculum “Materials in Our World.” Says teacher Lisa Hawley, “We have been learning about the origin of things in our world and during our unit about trees we learned that trees give us paper.” This workshop was also about “a process that students have never seen before and being able to see one thing transformed into something else,” adds Ms. Hawley. Students selected colors of construction paper and then ripped the paper into tiny pieces. Then it was time to blend those pieces together with water and white paper to make a pulp. The room was filled with giggles as kindergarteners saw their paper swirling around in a blender. Finally, students poured their pulp through a colander and drained off all of the water. To speed up the drying process, the newly formed paper was stuck to the window. “This workshop also connects to the learning we did around the holiday of Tu B’Shvat, where we appreciate trees and learn to be mindful to reuse, recycle, and conserve as much as we can.” MORE PHOTOS
