Brandeis Students Take Home Honors in Two RAVSAK Contests

Students in both Judaic studies and Hebrew classes participated in two RAVSAK contests recently, the 2016 Artists’ Beit Midrash Contest and the 2016 Hebrew Poetry Contest. For the Artists’ Beit Midrash Contest, fifth graders Eve Y. and Lev C. placed 1st and 3rd respectively in the K–5 drawing and painting category, while sixth grader Joshua E. was awarded 2nd place in the 6–8 photography and digital art category and sixth grader Joya T. received honorable mention in the 6–8 drawing and painting category. Approximately 80 Brandeis students participated in this contest, creating artwork in their Judaic studies classes. Winning artwork will be featured in the upcoming summer 2016 edition of HaYidion, the publication of RAVSAK and can also be seen here. Says RAVSAK students programs coordinator Yael Steiner, "The judges were impressed by [the Brandeis students'] creative interpretations of this year’s theme, 'Ahava-Love' and their reflections on the texts from the Global Day of Jewish Learning curriculum."

For the Hebrew poetry contest, fifth grader Rebecca M. and eighth grader Gabriella V. both received honorable mention for their poems. Approximately 120 Brandeis students and 540 students throughout the country participated in this contest. Both students will receive certificates of accomplishment and their poems will be published in the spring 2016 edition of HaYidion. To read the winning poems, click here. "The RAVSAK Hebrew Poetry Contest not only helps students develop their Hebrew language skills, but also gives them a chance to tap into their creative expression, reinforcing links between creativity and Jewish tradition," says RAVSAK co-executive director Marc N. Kramer. "By writing original poetry in Hebrew, participants develop a deeper sense of Jewish literacy."

Mazel tov (congratulations) and kol hakavod to our 6 Brandeis honorees and all of the contest participants!
