Kindergarteners Create Art for Permanent Year-long Display

As an introduction to their unit on color, kindergarteners were tasked with creating collaborative hanging sculptures that will help all students identify each table (denoted by the color of the sculpture) and will hang above each table for the entire school year. Art teacher Cathy Withrington began by first discussing the qualities of a sculpture, asking students what they thought a sculpture is. One student correctly replied, “It’s art made out of different materials.” For this project, says Ms. Withrington, “students were encouraged to experiment and use materials in many creative ways. They taped, glued, curled, twisted, knotted, and wrapped to create vibrant dynamic sculptures.”

In kindergarten art, each project explores the different elements of art, and this project specifically focuses on color. “The kindergarteners love to see their work displayed, and now they can see their own artwork every time they come to the art room!” exclaims Ms. Withrington. MORE PHOTOS
