Andy Warhol Inspires Third Grade Self-portraits
Inspired by artist Andy Warhol, third graders are creating self-portraits using a printmaking technique. This project teaches students about facial proportion, the color wheel, and complementary and analogous colors. After creating a stamp of their self-portraits, third graders used the stamp to create portraits in both complementary and analogous colors (red portrait on green paper, orange portrait on yellow paper, etc.). "The third grade art curriculum focuses primarily on expression and this project allows our students to explore the expressive qualities of color," says art teacher Rebekah Goldstein. Students delved into the meaning of colors, and noted that "complementary colors have a high energy and an exciting impact, while analogous colors have a calming subtle effect," adds Ms. Goldstein. Andy Warhol would be proud of the work of our third graders.
