Authors Visit Brandeis to Launch Book Fair
To launch this year’s Reading Rocks! Book Fair (the kick-off event is Sunday, November 6 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.), students were treated to some special guests this past week. On Friday, author (and screenwriter) Holly Goldberg Sloan met with our third through fifth graders. Goldberg Sloan is the author of Appleblossom the Possum and Counting by 7’s, and—to the amazement of the students—is also the screenwriter for the movie Angels in the Outfield. For middle school students, a representative from Books Inc. came and previewed some of the newest teen books that will be available at Book Fair. Says teacher Jennifer Baumer, “The middle school students really like the preview ahead of Book Fair. Now when they go, they’ll know some titles that interest them.” On Wednesday, kindergarten through second grade students heard from Mac Barnett, author of The Magic Word.
“This whole week of guests has been awesome,” Book Fair author coordinator Kate Glass says. “In our house, Mac Barnett is one of our favorite authors, so it's really exciting to get to meet him in person and hear him read his books. The kids asked really smart, interesting questions too. We’re very lucky to get exposed to some really talented authors just in time for Book Fair.”
