Capturing Light

Capturing Light

by Evan Spiler, Middle School Photography, and Math Teacher

In its first year as a full elective for all middle schoolers, photography has been a joy for our students. They've been learning all the technical basics of SLR photography and using them to explore their creative sides. Students have become familiar with new terms and light physics principles like aperture, shutter speed, pentaprism, bokeh, focal length, and more. They have used these new skills to explore the world abstractly by noticing how light and shadow create lines shapes and textures, and concretely to take window light portraits of their peers and teachers. As a teacher, I have been delighted and impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity of our students as they take on this new medium, capturing moments and producing work many professional photographers would be jealous of.
