First Graders Learn about Connection between the Brain and Mindfulness
The new first grade science unit is designed to teach students about the different parts of the brain and the important connection between the brain and mindfulness. On Wednesday, students went through a guided body scan—a type of meditation that focuses attention on physical sensations in the body, in which attention is given to every inch of the body. “We are integrating our own practices of mindfulness with the study of the human brain and our IFSEL (Institute for Social Emotional Learning) curriculum,” explains Abby Stanford, first grade resident teacher. The guiding question of this science unit asks, “Why would we want to be able to be mindful of our bodies?” Students are learning that being mindful of their bodies can help them be calm and relaxed.
Adds Ms. Stanford, “When you understand how your brain and body work together, you have more control over how you respond to big emotions you feel every day.”
