Fifth Grade Participates in Olympics Unit in P.E.

The summer Olympics may have concluded last August, but Brandeis fifth graders are picking up where the Olympics left off, competing in several Olympic sports in their P.E. classes. After selecting the countries they would like to represent—the USA, Canada, Colombia, England, Sweden, and Brazil, to name a few—teams of students are participating in basketball, soccer, handbook, track and field, and floorball. Walk into the gym or onto the blue top during class, and it’ll sound like an Olympics competition: students cheering on their country and donning the colors of their country’s flag. After all of the events are tallied, the winning country will be rewarded with a pizza party!

“The unit teaches students about teamwork and what it takes to be a good teammate,” says teacher Sam Dossick. “The students also get to learn about team spirit and understanding the values of staying positive, cheering your teammates on, equal opportunity for all players, and how that can translate into their actual lives moving forward.” MORE PHOTOS
