Shakespeare a Hit in Seventh Grade Language Arts
Seventh graders are immersed in a language arts unit on the famous William Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet. “This is my students’ first exposure to Shakespeare,” explains teacher Isaac Jacobs-Gomes. “It provides a great chance to dig into some difficult language and to practice literary analysis.” This week the class began studying for their Act I quiz, where they will be asked to identify characters, quotes, and plot elements. “More than anything else, reading Shakespeare is great fun. Act I is filled with overbearing parents, trash-talking, and (Elizabethan-era and thus totally appropriate for school) swear words,” adds Mr. Jacobs. “What more do you want in a seventh grade reading assignment?”
The seventh grade language arts throughlines ask, “How can we be thoughtful writers and readers?” “What does it mean to love reading?” and “How do I change the world through writing?” among others. Exclaims Mr. Jacobs, “In our work with
Romeo and Juliet, we see how Shakespeare inspires us to do all of this difficult but incredibly important work!”
