Throughout the year in the Hebrew and Judaic studies classes, kindergarteners learn the
aleph-bet. As part of their learning, each student creates an aleph-bet book, which includes a page dedicated to each letter and a Hebrew word that uses that letter (for example, the word
ani—meaning "I"—represents the letter
aleph, so each student drew a picture of him- or herself). “In addition, the students have many opportunities to explore the letters through a variety of sensory activities, such as building letters from Lego, using Play-Doh, and writing them in sand,” says teacher Irit Daly. As a culminating activity, kindergarteners rotated through centers where they played aleph-bet bingo, made letter cookies, used patterns to color letters, and watched the
Rechov Sumsum episode "Grover Learns Hebrew."
Says Ms. Daly, “I strongly believe in providing students with opportunities to explore topics and ideas through sensory and tactile activities that support and enhance their learning experience, curiosity, and creativity.
