Colorful Start to Brandeis Mentoring Program
The Brandeis Mentoring Program, now in its second year, colorfully kicked off last Friday afternoon. Students in fifth through eighth grade (mentors) are paired up with students in kindergarten through fourth grade and together they participate in activities and games. Friday’s activities centered around chalk (stop by the blue top or the playground, and you’ll see our students’ works of art) and was the idea of eighth grader and Brandeis Youth Mentoring Board Member Gabby L.-M. “One of the questions on the mentoring board application asked students what their ideas were for fun activities,” explains Dean of Student Life Sharona Israeli-Roth. “Gabby had a great idea to use chalk. Then all of the board members brainstormed games and activities buddy pairs could do using the chalk and getting to know one another.” This colorful afternoon was the start of what will surely be a fun year in the mentoring program; this year, each meeting will be centered around a specific academic discipline, including math and science.
“The goal of the Youth Mentoring Board is to enable students to empower their peers to be leaders for the younger students,” says Ms. Israeli-Roth. “I was in awe of the excitement and leadership that the mentors and mentoring board created during our first mentoring day, and I am excited to see how the students continue to hone their leadership skills this year.”
