Second Graders Gain Insight into the Pilgrim and Native American Perspectives

Second graders have been learning about Thanksgiving and immigration, with a focus on on the Pilgrims and native Americans during this period in United States history. “In order to make this material real and give students the opportunity to put history in perspective,” explains Ms. Klein, “we are creating a class timeline.” Each student is given a period in time to create an illustration and write about what happened during that time, such as “Squanto teaches the Pilgrims how to harvest the land.” When the illustrations and writings are complete, each part will be placed in chronological order and posted across the windows “for students to study and reflect upon,” adds Ms. Klein.

“As students in second grade developmentally gain empathy and become highly curious about the world around them, this social studies unit allows them to think about both the Native American and Pilgrim perspectives. Activities such as this class timeline allow them to go deeper in their understanding of the events that occurred.” MORE PHOTOS
