Grandparents and Special Friends Day Highlights Intergenerational Learning
On Tuesday, November 21, Brandeis welcomed over 150 grandparents and special friends to campus for our annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day. The day was filled with intergenerational learning, Thanksgiving celebrations, and student performances. After listening to our lower school and middle school bands welcome them with music at the front entrance, guests made their way to the gym where Head of School Dr. Dan Glass spoke about spiritual learning at Brandeis, an adaption of a presentation he delivered at the Collaborative for Spiritual Development at Columbia University. Students in the middle school musical and the lower school chorus also performed during the lunchtime gathering. Following the lunchtime presentation, grandparents and special friends made their way to the classrooms, where our students were eagerly awaiting their guests. Students engaged in many activities with their guests, including questionnaires about their guests’ experience in school and games related to the curriculum they are learning.
“Grandparents and Special Friends Day is an important tradition at the school,” says Director of Development Stacy Youkilis, “because it allows our students to share what makes this school special and shows how teachers inspire our students to lead lives of learning and purpose. One grandparent summed it up beautifully to me, ‘This ongoing tradition reminds us that an excellent education, close-knit community, and the celebration of Jewish traditions are all under one roof at Brandeis.’” MORE PHOTOS
