Middle School Students Model Artwork after Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry, a contemporary British artist famous for his “Perry Pots,” has provided the inspiration for the middle school art and design elective. These Perry Pots use layers and both found and drawn images to show society as it is now. Rather than make clay pots as Perry does, however, our students created papier-mâché structures layered with geometric shapes and both found and drawn images. Students were tasked with showing what it is like to be a teenager in 2018. “The idea is that if their pots were buried underground and then uncovered 100 years later, those people could learn about being a teenager in 2018,” explains art teacher Cathy Withrington. Images depicted by the students ranged from social and political issues to video games to flora and fauna.

“Students have the freedom to put imagery on their ‘pot’ that they feel depicts what means it means to be a teenager in 2018,” adds Ms. Withrington. “The last layer of the collage will tie all of the parts together.” MORE PHOTOS
