Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team Brings Home First CYO Girls’ Basketball Championship Trophy

On Tuesday afternoon, in front of many Brandeis Lions supporters, the girls’ varsity basketball team defeated West Portal Lutheran School 33–17 to take home the first CYO championship trophy for girls’ basketball. Down 7–0 after the first quarter, Brandeis fought back in second quarter to take a 2-point lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Brandeis's relentless press defense led to a 6–0 run, putting the Lions up for good. Noga E. and Esme K.-O. finished off the 4th quarter with back-to-back shot fakes to power layups to seal the victory. “Those moves were not only a testament to their growth over the last four years, but our entire team’s growth,” says Coach Corrie. “What an outstanding run these 8th graders have had for the last four years of basketball! Advancing to five championship games is no easy feat, and to end their middle school career with a banner is incredible. Our team motto for the playoffs was to bring esh (fire) every game, and by doing so, each one of them took their game to an entirely different level.” MORE PHOTOS
