Fifth Grade Wraps Up Artist Project

For the past several weeks, fifth graders have been engaged in the Artist Project, a Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop project in which students select an artist of interest to them and then conduct research about the artist’s personal and professional lives. “This is probably the most challenging unit in fifth grade in regards to personal time management,” explains teacher Eitam Kohen, as students complete a research paper, a slideshow presentation, and an art project in the style of their artist. Some of the artists researched include Walt Disney, LeRoy Neiman, Frida Kahlo, and Julia Morgan. On Tuesday, students presented their slideshows to classmates and parents, and tonight at Open House “the students will dress up as their artists and talk about ‘their’ life,” adds Mr. Kohen, as they present the “Artist Project Living Museum.” Be sure to stop by the 2nd floor of the mercaz to see the fifth grade’s living art museum!
