First Grade Learns about Strong Women as Part of Women's History Month

For part of Women’s History Month, first graders learned about and celebrated the most important women in their lives and in the world. “This month is a time to reflect on the extraordinary accomplishments of women and honor their role in shaping the course of our nation’s history,” says teacher Barbara Eisenhauer. The students read books about important women in history and chose ten facts about the woman they selected to research on a poster. In addition, students also learned about and celebrated the most important women in their own lives: their moms. And finally, students created an exhibit of Jewish women, women who “faced twin burdens in making their way in the world. They experienced discrimination that bore no relationship to their talent or their ability to contribute to society,” adds Ms. Eisenhauer. “We learned that if a person has strong will and works hard, one can overcome artificial barriers and turn dreams into reality.” This unit also connected to the Brandeis core values, as the class discussed the integrity and service each of the women contributed to their families, communities, and the world.
