Speaker Inspires Students to Take Action

On Tuesday Laura DeDominicis, of the U.S.-based nonprofit organization Nurturing Minds, came to speak with fourth through eighth grade students about one of NM's main benefactors, the SEGA Girls School in Tanzania. The SEGA Girls School is a residential secondary school for Tanzanian girls who are otherwise unable to attend school due to extreme poverty. Middle school teacher Ali Frank spearheaded the effort to bring this talk to Brandeis. “Inspired by Dean of Student Life Sharona Israeli-Roth’s mentorship program, I felt this talk was a really great way to get our students to think about the bigger picture,” says Ms. Frank. “We do so much amazing work with local organizations and I think it’s really important for our students to look outside the Bay Area for ways to help the world.” Ms. DeDominicis provided our students with an overview of the school and shared the many ways U.S.-based organizations can become school partners—everything from being penpals to hosting fundraisers.

Adds Ms. Frank, “I was very touched by our students’ thoughtful questions. I have had several students already ask me how they can help and when we can get started.” Brandeis is hoping to become a school partner and students will meet next week to brainstorm ways to raise money.
