Artist Gustav Klimt Inspires Kindergarten Project

Gustav Klimt is the inspiration behind the current kindergarten art project.. “We began the project by looking at pattern,” says teacher Cathy Withrington. “We discussed five of Gustav Klimt’s paintings and noticed his use of pattern and gold leaf, and that he liked painting portraits.” The kindergarteners then began their own project: drawing portraits of the class pet (stuffed animal), Lemon the Snake. Says Ms. Withrington, “Snakes have a lot of interesting patterns. The students started by drawing the outline of a snake and then added patterns inside.” Through this project, students not only learned about Mr. Klimt and his art, but also how to use liquid water colors to add more detail to their work. They will use oil pastels and gold paint for the finishing touches.

Adds Ms. Withrington, “We practiced being mindful while we were making patterns, and listened to classical piano music. The lesson was peace and the kinders did some fantastic, detailed work.” MORE PHOTOS
