Kindergartners Begin The Year in Judaic Studies with Tour of Synagogue

Kindergarteners have begun their first Judaic studies unit of the year, learning all about the synagogue. “It is important to give the students an introduction to Jewish life and help them connect with their community and heritage,” says teacher Elana Lahav. To bring this unit to life, students visited Beth Israel Judea next door to take a tour and “see with their own eyes the many things they have already learned in the classroom,” adds Ms. Lahav. After being introduced to the sanctuary, Ms. Lahav and Ms. Irit Daly showed the students, among other things, a kippah (skull cap), siddur (prayer book), and tallit (prayer shawl). Students then got to see the Torah when the ark was opened.

“Our visit to Beth Israel Judea is an opportunity for hands-on learning for our students and promotes familiarity with the synagogues, a sacred place and the different ritual items connected with Jewish worship all over the world,” adds Ms. Lahav. “The students had an opportunity to reflect on what they saw when we returned to the classroom.” MORE PHOTOS
